About

Xavier Martins

Freelancer from birth

Photographer, journalist, visual artist, …

Born in Portugal, on September 26th, 1970

His photographic work is published all around the world in the most varied areas. He has cooperated with dozens of publications and agencies, both Portuguese and foreign, and, among other activities, was the founder and director of the Portuguese version of an international music magazine. At some point, his natural curiosity and fascination about the human nature led him to war theatres, where he started collecting images that are representative of the populations’ daily lives in the conflict zones.

Based in this interest in humanistic photography, he presented several workshops and has worked as invited lecturer in various universities.

He has an entrepreneurial spirit and believes that a good idea is only as good as the ability to materialize it.

He has lived in several foreign countries and has absorbed a little of every culture, and this is reflected in his creative approach.

When returning to Portugal, after several years living in Belgium, he has brought with him a suitcase-load of projects that, little by little, are coming to life in parallel with the other work he develops… Under the Blackbird’s Eye is the most recent.
